How does a relatively small, not for profit organisation in Newcastle win such a prestigious award two years in a row?
It’s all about big ideas and open hearts.
NovaCare CEO, Joseph McCarthy is over the moon. “It’s a bit like David and Goliath”, he said
“NovaCare is smaller, more agile and open to new ideas that genuinely improve the quality of life for older people living at home. We were delighted to win the award in 2016, and hugely gratified to be honoured again in June 2017.”
In a first for community based organisations in Australia, NovaCare implemented the Cycling Without Age program this year. Founded in Denmark in 2012 and now a growing international movement, Cycling Without Age was born with a dream of creating a society where all ages have the opportunity to enjoy a sense of freedom, feel the wind in their hair and continue to experience quality of life in ways only a bike ride can offer.
The innovative ‘Triobikes’, recently nominated for a Danish Design Award, have been seen cycling around Newcastle, piloted by a volunteer and carrying two passengers in safety and comfort.
“While many of our clients no longer have the physical ability to get back on the bike, Cycling Without Age takes them on board” explains Mr McCarthy. They could be free wheeling along the harbour foreshore or simply down memory lane, with unimpeded views as they sit up front. It’s invigorating and fun, interacting with others and experiencing the city and nature close up from the bicycle that is battery assisted for longer rides and uphill climbs.”
“It aligns with NovaCare’s purpose of Live Your Way and is a new addition to our stable of fun and meaningful activities that we offer. These include Sing Out Loud Together (partnering with the Arts Health Institute) and a chockablock calendar of social and well being activities.” Joseph has been blown away by the number of eager volunteers. NovaCare represents the Australia – Newcastle and Lake Macquarie chapters for this global movement.
